History
Limatola Castle
Built in the 12th century, it was built by the Normans on the remains of an ancient Lombard tower.
This majestic manor was once the home of monarchs and powerful nobles, whose rule extended over this region rich in history and culture.
It stands on a hill, in a strategic position: ruler of the ancient medieval town of Benevento and guardian of the valley furrowed by the Volturno River, between the Taburno massif, Mount Maggiore and the Tifatini Mountains. Its centuries-old stone walls and majestic courts bear witness to court intrigues, secret loves and lavish feasts: enchanted settings where legends come to life.
A past to tell, a future to live.
The interventions promoted by Charles I of Anjou date back to 1277, to be recognized in the ogival vaulted rooms adjoining the oldest part of the structure corresponding to the rectangular-shaped keep.
To the Counts Della Ratta, feudal lords of Limatola from 1420, are ascribable the interventions on the outermost walls and restructuring and extensions implemented in some rooms on the stairs and loggias, in Renaissance taste.
Nel secondo decennio del XVI secolo, Francesco Gambacorta e Caterina Della Ratta effettuarono interventi sulle strutture difensive e sulla Chiesa palatina di San Nicola che conserva però l’originario portale romanico. Durante il Rinascimento, importanti lavori di ristrutturazione lo trasformarono da dimora militare, di cui conserva ancora alcune caratteristiche come la Cinta Muraria intervallata da torri e la Scarpata fino all’altezza del cornicione, a dimora signorile.
